Fernanda won the Elite Look of the Year contest at the age of 13, and later moved to São Paulo to pursue a modeling career. She has appeared in a number of popular magazines including Marie Claire, ELLE, Vogue, Cosmopolitan, Allure, and the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue.

Tavares also works as a commercial advertising model and is a VJ for MTV Brasil, in which she hosts "Missão MTV", a show modeled after the show "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy". Fernanda has signed a $1.3 million deal with perfume company Guerlain, and regularly models for Victoria's Secret.
